Se retir\u00f3 al desierto y en Bel\u00e9n edific\u00f3 un monasterio, donde se dio de lleno al estudio de las lenguas orientales y a su gran obra escritur\u00edstica. Muri\u00f3 en Bel\u00e9n el a\u00f1o 420. La Iglesia lo llama Doctor M\u00e1ximo en la ciencia de interpretar las Sagradas Escrituras.
